Mental Health in the Workplace

Why is mental health so important in the workplace and why should you make it a priority?


The COVID-19 Pandemic has continued to highlight the significance of taking care our of mental health. It has resulted in feelings of uncertainty about the future which may have led to a shift in the way we approach mental health, and the need for further support.

Compared to 2019, 2020 has seen a 10% increase in the number of days employees took days off work due to their mental health (Coping with Covid, 2021, Westfield Health). This can reflect how more needs to be done to ensure mental health is at the forefront of the agenda within the workplace. 

12.7% of all sickness days in the UK can be attributed to mental health conditions, (, 2021) and these are only the ones that are recorded due to the stigma that still exists around mental health. How many people may suffer in silence because they do not feel supported at work?

This is why it is so important to have Mental Health First Aiders in the workplace, that can offer help and support to their colleagues, benefits of having mental health First Aider is:

  1. By raising awareness, Mental Health First Aiders can encourage healthy behaviours to aid in individuals bettering themselves and collectively supporting others. This fundamentally creates a more positive working environment due to an improved mental wellbeing in the workplace.
  2. First Aiders create a safe space and opportunity to talk. First Aiders are a confidante and are able to make aware the appropriate avenues of support/professional help if necessary.
  3. The more Mental Health First Aiders are promoting the message of mental wellbeing, hopefully, the stigma attached will diminish. As people are further educated on mental wellbeing and how to identify it, the more understanding an attitude the workplace can have.

Recently, mental wellbeing has been a hot topic of conversation, so now more than ever we need to do all we can to support each other.
