Counselling

The Unmasked Counselling Service aims to provide an affordable counselling service for the residents of Calderdale.

What does counselling offer and who is it for?

Counselling is a form of ‘talking therapy’, a process where an individual meets with a trained professional to talk about any issues and problems that they might be experiencing. Professional counselling is always confidential and non-judgmental.

Unmasked Counselling Service offers a comfortable and confidential space where you can talk about the things, big or small, that could be impacting your life. You will be listened to and understood, working towards gaining an insight, awareness and understanding of how to make positive choices and to feel good about yourself and life around you.

Whatever you need to talk about, resolving even the smallest of issues can be the key to achieving your ultimate goals.

Counselling can help if:-

  • You are feeling stuck and not sure what to do.
  • You have recently been bereaved or experienced a loss of some kind.
  • A past event is niggling away at you.
  • You are feeling stressed or anxious.
  • You are living with a long-term illness or medical condition.
  • You, a family member or close friend has received a terminal diagnosis.
  • You are a carer.
  • You have experienced trauma, either as a child or adult.
  • You have been diagnosed with depression.
  • You have poor self-image, low self-esteem, or are lacking in confidence.
  • You want to make significant life changes.
  • You are using alcohol or drugs to self-medicate and make those unpleasant feelings go away.
  • You have a sense of loss of direction.
  • A relationship feels unfulfilling.
  • You are going through a divorce or separation.
  • You feel unsettled, or uncertain about your sexual identity.

Please note that the Unmasked Counselling Service is for adults, i.e. over 18 years of age, only.

A Subsidised Service Made Accessible for All

Unmasked Mental Health is proud to provide a low-cost, subsidised counselling service, helping to make professional support accessible to as many people as possible. Sessions are offered at £30 each, payable in advance.

We also offer an Access Fund for individuals on means-tested benefits. This fund is entirely supported through grants and donations and is available only when sufficient funding is in place. We do our very best to make this support accessible whenever possible.

Because our service is heavily subsidised—and demand for support is high—clients must attend their scheduled appointments. Missed sessions can create delays for others waiting for help, and they also create additional costs for our small charity. We understand that unexpected things happen, so if you do need to cancel, we kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice; otherwise, the session fee will be charged.

Once you submit an enquiry using the form below, we will send you a short referral form to complete. After this, our friendly and professional counselling co-ordinators will contact you to arrange an initial consultation.

Your initial consultation will take place over the phone and will last approximately 30–45 minutes. During this call, we’ll learn more about your needs, discuss your availability, and match you with the most suitable Counsellor. We will then book your first counselling session at a time that works for you.

Your reliability helps us keep this service affordable and ensures we can support as many people as we can.

Our Hubs

Unmasked Mental Health Support Hubs are for anyone experiencing mental health issues or anyone who is interacting with someone experiencing mental health issues.  You can talk as much or as little as you would like in the group; the support group gives you space to make that choice.

Each of our groups are informal and relaxed and are run by volunteers. They are ‘peer support’ groups (meaning people get support from each other), not therapy groups, although, for some, they may have a therapeutic benefit. All groups are led by a facilitator or co-facilitators whose role is to encourage the group to develop and flourish in a safe, non-judgemental and inclusive way.

Below, you’ll be able to see which of our Hubs is the most local to you, along with the date and time of the next meeting. Unmasked Hubs are usually open every Thursday from 7-8pm.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at an Unmasked Hub please get in touch by clicking contact

We look forward to hearing from you!
